About
Driaan Claassen is a distinguished South African sculptor whose work delves deeply into the exploration of the human psyche through intricate, thought-provoking sculptures. Born in Johannesburg in 1991, Driaan’s journey into art began with an early interest in 3D animation, which was soon followed by an apprenticeship with Otto du Plessis, a renowned artist and founder of Bronze Age Foundry. This foundational experience helped him develop a unique approach, blending traditional craftsmanship with modern technology to create works that are both intellectually engaging and visually compelling.
Driaan’s work spans various materials, including wood, wire, and bronze, each carefully chosen for its ability to convey complex psychological and philosophical themes. His sculptures are characterized by a seamless integration of material innovation and psychological depth, reflecting his deep fascination with concepts of consciousness, order, and chaos. His artistic process often involves a meticulous combination of ancient techniques and cutting-edge technology, resulting in pieces that challenge viewers to contemplate the intricate interplay between the material world and the inner workings of the mind.
Driaan’s sculptures have been featured in some of the world’s most prestigious galleries and art fairs, including Design Miami, Design Days Dubai, and AIYA Collectible. His solo exhibitions, such as Forms of Silence at AIYA Bureau in 2022, Order and Chaos at EBONY/CURATED in 2021, and Complex Systems at THK Gallery in 2023, have garnered significant acclaim, establishing him as a leading figure in contemporary art.
His innovative approach to exploring the intricacies of consciousness through art earned him residencies at the Villa-Legodi Centre for Sculpture, where his collaboration with Catherine Ash resulted in the Emergent Properties exhibition at Nirox Sculpture Park in 2023. Additionally, his month-long residency at Quartier am Hafen in Cologne, supported by THK Gallery, marked a significant milestone in his career. During this time, he developed the thesis “Digital Nomad Revolution,” exploring the intersection of traditional craftsmanship and modern digital tools. This project culminated in a series of digital-first artworks that challenge traditional notions of art and manufacturing, exemplifying his commitment to pushing the boundaries of contemporary sculpture.
At the core of Driaan’s work is a commitment to creating art that bridges the material and the mind, sparking deep reflection and evoking powerful emotions. Through his sculptures, he invites viewers to embark on a journey of self-discovery, healing, and profound understanding, positioning him as a significant voice in both the local and international art scenes.
